The epidemic came and went and we never got samples. We never saw the actual test results. Why is the IHN vaccine no longer working? Or did the industry stop using it? What happened to the threatened Megin sockeye and chinook salmon? Are they now carrying the pathogens that entered their bloodstream here – into the North Pacific. The virus lasts days and if you use Kyle Garver’s testimony at Cohen of 650 billion viral particles released per hour, per million farm salmon, divide in half to the number of fish in this farm and multiply by 24 hours you get 7 trillion, 8 hundred million 7,800,000,000,000 a day. There is a massive IHN virus presence ( or whatever this is), drifting through, and out of Clayoquot.

At the risk of wearing out my welcome, I would add the following comment.
Even now, I still have no idea how the farm and the regulator(s) assessed the fish cull virus transfer risks, adapted a site specific protocol and kept the public (including First Nations) informed of the reasons for specific risk management actions.
Many, myself included, have commented on biosecurity and quarantine restrictions. I would have been a lot happier if I understood that the flow of information, decisions and actions was based on evidence and reasonable precautions. Again, the public is largely left uninformed.
Biosecurity does not only include the farm site and the offloading dock, it includes the composting facility itself.
Last April, the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety in assessing risk of aquaculture by products for fish feed, concluded that IHNV can be inactivated by treatment at high temperatures for specific periods but it can also be inactivated by ensilage at a low pH.
The question to be asked if all the fish cull ended up in a composting facility, are the controlled conditions adequate to inactivate the IHNV ?
Where does the public learn of any undertakings made by the fish farm and the waste site owner?
Dropping a cone of silence over the entire culling process is disquieting.

The information is available in a fact sheet on Mainstream’s website. As for lack of information don’t know where you’ve been because Mainstream announced this the day they found it. They announced bio security measures in place and quarantine the same day. It has been on their website daily and all over Twitter and in local Vancouver Island newspapers. Far from a lack of information. Perhaps if people listened less to Alex and did more of their own research they would find the facts they seek.
Amanda: WHO TO HELL IS MAINSTREAM?????? They don’t make the rules, inform us and determine our future.
I don’t ever remember seeing their name on a voting ballot, Federally or Provincially. Have we ever have a chance as Canadians to rate their performance? Have we as Canadians ever had a chance to say if THEY represant our values and concerns? Why do they have any say in the future of our province or communities?
This entity is a corporate leach deriving their profits by consuming the collective public resources of BC and shipping the profits from this consumption out of our communities and province.
Where to hell is DFO soon to be known as Beach Rocks & Oceans? I thought we elected representative from OUR communities to direct PUBLIC servants. It now appears Mainstream has become our masters directing public policy, telling us what they want us to know and the useless government doing their bidding.
Why would I have to go to a CORPORATE WEB SITE to find out what is happening in MY COMMUNITY or the PUBLIC DOMAIN?
Perhaps you should ask your local news that question. It has been on CTV several times and Chek too. What you expect them to call you personally and tell you ? Good grief your posting on a blog that has a piece on anything that happens and you cannot take the trouble to verify what Alex Morton tells you by doing a little of your own research. And don’t shout at me thank you. As for your rant it’s a little silly and exaggerated thanks. Mainstream isn’t doing anything your accusing them of. They are trying to keep the public informed and I personally feel they have been most forthcoming with news as it happens. The problem is you and people like you don’t believe anyone but Alex Morton even though she has no direct line to what’s happening.
Even in a business friendly province like BC, regulators shrink from giving private companies powers that are granted by the Legislature to the regulators (there are good grounds to believe they are barred from doing that).
So when a company announces a quarantine – for good and sound reasons – all I want to know is by whose authority are they entitled to prevent citizens from moving about in public spaces.
I am not saying that Mainstream had no rights on their own property, only on public property they have/or had to have had specific authorization from a Minister, Chief Veterinarian etc to impose a quarantine.
Mainstream were not slow to announce a quarantine only none of the regulators have weighed in to say that this was by specific authorization of the appropriate official.
Virus outbreaks will occur again. It would be appropriate that in the future all the parties knew how the quarantine powers were to be exercised.
The CFIA as a federal agency seems curiously reluctant to make this clear with respect to aquaculture (though their protocol for avian flu is crystal clear).

Bio security is always in effect on the farms and transport vessels. When disease outbreaks occur that security level is heightened further. But anti farm supporters prefer to claim enforcing those measures shows a lack of transparency. Just a stupid circle jerk argument . As for Morton claiming you cannot prevent people from using the ocean the argument is totally irrelevent to the issue at hand. And yes you can to prevent the spread of disease. Rudd’s claim he was told by a biologist disease cannot be spread by the hull of a vessel is false. Transport vessels disinfect their hulls constantly.
Amanda, please don’t get too carried away. The RCMP never ordered me away from anywhere. In fact they never spoke to me. They were called by Mainstream, after Mainstream grabbed Anissa Reed’s camera. The RCMP arrived and left because they did not see a problem.
Regarding vessel hulls, please let us know how the OCEAN KING disinfected its hull after leaving Dixon, before it entered Alberni Inlet?
Dfo, “beach rocks and oceans” ha funny I get it.
